The Opportunity Cost of Community Open Source – A Business Perspective

“Open Source is free software, why should I pay for support?”, “There’s no real difference between the community and enterprise open source versions.”, and “My developers are very technical and know what they’re doing, we’re fine operating on the community version.”

These are very common responses I hear in conversations with customers and prospects.  We’re contacted at least 3 times a week from companies who have run into a dead-end trying to locate and correct software defects that are causing disruptions in their business.

Is JBoss really a Commercially viable product?

While I am not asked nearly as much as I was five years ago, this question pops up from time to time at client meetings, conferences, and in casual conversation by prospects and others who work in the proprietary middleware technologies.  It’s as if because the JBoss Enterprise platforms are based on Open Source projects that their quality, stability, extensibility, or scalability is placed into question.  To save my breath and prevent me from sounding like a broken record, I thought I would provide some “food for thought”, and then allow you to decide.

Hibernate OGM - JPA for NoSQL?

The fine Hibernate folks have embarked on the ambitious goal of bringing Java Persistence API (JPA) support to the NoSQL space and have made some great progress to this end. The project is called the Hibernate Object/Grid Mapper (OGM), and it's the next framework we're evaluating for connecting to Mongo from Java.

Morphia - A Java-based Object Document Mapper (ODM) Framework for MongoDB

Morphia is a lighter weight framework for mapping Java objects from / to MongoDB. Unlike Spring Data and Hibernate OGM, Morphia only works with Mongo.

A little bit of knowledge can go a long way, and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I recently came across a Red Hat white paper entitled, "Why Subscribe To Enterprise Open Source Software? Top Ten Reasons to Use JBoss Enterprise Middleware" that I think does a great job of laying out the challenges facing IT decision makers when considering a Middleware solution.  Although this whitepaper was written back in 2010, the points made are still very much relevant.

JBoss EAP 6 vs Oracle WebLogic 12c

At Vizuri, we are not technology bigots, but are advocates for the use of Open Source, Open Standands based software.  We understand that different situations call for different solutions, and no one Vendor has the best product in each technology vertical. That said, I'm constantly surprised at the lengths proprietary software vendors will go to spread fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) regarding Enterprise Open Source Software.  This is particularly true in the middleware space.  I hear from customers every day who are tired of the outrageous license and maintenance fees these proprietary vendors are charging, and the tactics they are using to rope customer's in before "taking them to the cleaners."
